Skype Shutdown

In a significant move, Microsoft has announced that it will be retiring its iconic video conferencing service, Skype, on May 5, 2025. This decision marks the end of an era for a platform that revolutionised online communication for over two decades.

Microsoft is encouraging all Skype users to transition to Microsoft Teams, its modern communication and collaboration hub. Existing Skype users will be able to sign in to Teams using their Skype credentials, ensuring a seamless migration of chats and contacts.

No new subscriptions or Skype Credit purchases will be available. Current users can use their credits and subscriptions until the end of their renewal period.

Impact on Businesses

For businesses relying on Skype for communication, this transition presents an opportunity to leverage the advanced features of Microsoft Teams. Teams offer a more integrated experience, combining video conferencing, chat, and collaboration tools in one platform.
